Third Age Life Planning: A Holistic Approach

A Pre-Conference and Conference Track offered in conjunction with
Beyond the Cutting Edge, National Positive Aging Conference
December 6 8, 2007
Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida

The moment of opportunity is now. With visions of positive aging dancing in their heads, waves of Baby Boomers began hitting the metaphorical beach in January. They are embracing the newly recognized life stage known variously as third age, midlife and beyond, the bonus years and second half of life determined to create purposeful lives that express their talents, feed their passions, channel their energies and drive positive change.
The Life Planning Network sees a robust professional opportunity for life coaches, career counselors, retirement consultants and related professionals to inspire and guide those Boomers who will thoughtfully approach this new life stage. With 77,000,000 of them, there will be plenty for all of us even if one tenth of 1% seek professional guidance! Already in the queue are the pre-Boomers, another 30 million age 61-75, who have begun to redefine work, aging and retirement.
A holistic model for Third Age Life Planning
We are on the leading edge of the burgeoning field of third age life planning. This is not the old retirement planning that only addressed finances. A holistic model that encompasses a broad spectrum of life planning services and resources will best serve the pre-Boom and leading-edge Boomer population.
The time is right for a national conversation that explores a holistic model, one that recognizes all aspects of people’s lives and involves partnerships with professionals from diverse fields such as health care, financial and estate planning, housing, community and social service, business and the arts.
The time is also right to create a national organization that establishes professional standards and best practices, fosters partnerships with professionals in diverse fields, shares resources and information, and develops and mentors new leaders in the Positive Aging movement.
The pre-conference
The Third Age Life Planning pre-conference opens December 5 with an evening keynote address delivered by Gene D. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Cohen is the author of The Mature Mind: The Positive Power of the Aging Brain and The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life. He is also director of the Center on Aging, Health and Humanities at George Washington University, where he is professor of health care sciences and psychiatry.
The following days will include presentations and discussions with other renowned authors and thought leaders, including Helen Dennis, Richard J. Leider and William A. Sadler, Ph.D., as well as interactive workshops from selected conference participants.
Our intention
The purpose of this first-ever life planning pre-conference is to stimulate cross-fertilization, communication, and collaboration among professionals from around the country within the emerging field of third age life planning.
Participants may choose to continue and deepen the conversation by participating in the life planning track of the National Positive Aging Conference. Throughout both the pre-conference and the life planning conference track, we will offer presentations and dialogue with major speakers, highly interactive workshops, facilitated town-meeting/world café discussions, and working groups. In addition, there will be opportunities for program exchange and networking sessions.
Who should join us
For the pre-conference and the life planning track, the Life Planning Network is targeting thought leaders and practitioners in third age life planning, retirement coaching, adult development, career and work specialists, and other related professions.
Together we will:
- Plumb the third age life stage from the body, mind and spiritual perspectives with well-respected thought leaders.
- Raise awareness of the value of life planning for midlife and beyond, from the vantage point of diverse professions.
- Introduce, elaborate on, and achieve support for an integrated (holistic) model for life planning.
- Build broad understanding of and support for standards and competencies for life planning professionals serving this population.
- Explore effective practices and research in this area and find ways to share across disciplines, professions, and regions.
- Take steps toward creating a national network of professionals serving midlife transition and ongoing needs of third-agers.
- Create ripple effects as inspired participants apply their learning in their work and communities.
We will focus on two aspects of life planning:
- Professional development for providers of life planning and related services for third-agers (our primary focus) and
- Organizational development of a national network of diverse professionals for the purpose of sharing ideas, information, values and resources related to third age life planning.
