Friendships and Affiliations

The Third Age can be a time for deepening existing friendships and making new ones. As we develop new interests, perhaps even move to a new location, we have opportunities to connect with new people. Joining organizations and participating in groups offer other ways to connect.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Who are the important relationships in my life? (Consider family, friends, acquaintances, support professionals, groups and pets.)
  • How will I stay connected with them?
  • Are there unresolved relationship issues that need attention?
  • Which friends provide real connection, nourishment, and support?
  • Do I have friendships with people of varied ages?
  • Should I take a more proactive role in developing new relationships?
  • Do I need to expand my social life, make time for fun with friends?
  • Would I like to get a pet?
  • Do I participate in any groups or organizations that give me a sense of belonging and shared interests? Do I need more or fewer groups?
  • How will I make and keep new friends?
