Recreation,
Leisure and Travel
This
area of adult life, often given short shrift during the busy career
building and/or family raising years, may become a priority in
our Third Age. Pursuits in this area help us create more balanced
lives.
Ask
yourself these questions:
-
What active and quiet activities will I do for fun?
-
What brings an element of challenge and excitement to my life?
-
In what activities do I lose myself and my sense of time?
-
What prior interests, talents, or hobbies do I want to renew?
-
Would I like to plan a travel adventure or expedition?
-
What worlds near and far do I long to explore?
-
Might I like to join a team sport or a club related to an interest
of mine?
-
Do I have enough down-time and fun in my life? If not, what
will I do to create more?

Important Considerations
Financial
Needs and Resources
Financial
planning is also important in preparing for the Third Age. When
individuals have a vision of the life they want to create, they
may be at a distinct advantage when working with their financial
advisor. The more clarity you have about the life you want to
be living in your Third Age, the more accurately you can project
what you will need in the way of income, savings and other assets
to support that lifestyle.
Housing
and Lifestyle
Many
individuals and couples rethink housing needs and lifestyle as
they approach their Third Age. Most decide to downsize, paring
down their accumulated possessions. Some stay where they are living
while others move into town where they can walk to stores, restaurants,
theaters and the like. Others move to the country where they are
closer to nature. Still others relocate to be closer to family,
in gentler climates or in less expensive locales. Deciding yours
and your significant other’s preferences among urban, suburban
or rural settings is key. It is also useful to consider the geography
that is home for you: mountains, hills, lakes, deserts, coastal
areas or plains.
